days' of music
The glory of American popular music—from George Gershwin and Sigmund Romberg to Hoagy Carmichael and Richard Rodgers—will be celebrated in a concert by Piedmont-area choristers at The Theatre at Washington, Va., 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. The program of the Culpeper-Piedmont Choral Society is called “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.”
The songs range from the profoundly moving spirital “Deep River” to the rousing strains of “Stouthearted Men,” and from the toe-tapping, make-youwant-to-dance-in-the-aisles swing compositions of George Gershwin to Western favorites such as “Wagon Wheels” and “The Colorado Trail.”
The 50 Choral Society members who will be singing at The Theatre in “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” represent communities throughout the Piedmont area. Among them are Rappahannock residents Renate Chapman of Washington, Angie Keys of Slate Mills and Margaret White, who lives in Sperryville and who is featured in the Gershwin ensemble.
The Culpeper-Piedmont Choral Society and its predecessor, the Choral Society of Culpeper, have performed sacred and secular classics, folk songs, light opera, and musical comedy for the past 24 years. In July 1987, several Choral Society singers, together with others from the Washington, D.C. area, performed in a European Musical Festival held in Warsaw, Poland and then-East Berlin.
Lois Morrow Shanks, organist and director of music at the Orange Presbyterian Church in Orange, has been the Choral Society’s musical director since 1982.
The accompanist is Mary Lu Hartsell, organist and music director of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Warrenton.
The Theatre is located at the comer of Gay and Jett streets. Tickets are $5. Advance reservations are recommended. Tickets may also be purchased at the box office on the day of the performance.
