plate or other object encourages one to study the character of the wood Mr. Exton has shaped. In one instance, I counted 30 years of growth, an insignificant aspect of the vase in hand, perhaps, but all important art suggests multiple interpretations.
Mr. Exton’s two stylish tables in this show are feats for the eyes in every respect. They are constructed pieces, as opposed to self-defined, turned ones, fantasies one might expect to see in a palace. Their details are unusual and their finish, a miracle of gloss.
Works of art call for a setting; the Middle Street Gallery’s simplicity allows the drawings and sculp-' tures of Mr. Johnson and Mr. Exton to reverberate harmoniously for our pleasure. A visit to this exhibition will become a treasured recollection for the years ahead.
