There are new categories for runners in their 40s this year, due to increased demand. The categories are (the same for men and women): 12 and under, 13-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 4549, 50-59, and 60 and over.
In addition to the Eva Smith Memorial Awards, donated this year by Merrill Strange, trophies go to the first three finishers in each category.
Virginia Savings Bank of Front Royal presents a $300 check to any runner to break the men’s or women’s course records; they split the check if both records fall. The men’s record is 31:26, set by Steve Pinard. The women’s record is 36:46, held by Kim Belyea.
After the race, the Washington Baptist Church will hold its annual spring event featuring box lunches, a plant sale, refreshments and a flea market. Numerous galleries and shops will also be open in Washington.
The race takes about $2,500 to put on, and it seldom comes within $300 of breaking even anymore—although it used to make money. Any business or individual who can pitch in is encouraged to call Ms. Lillard at 675-3670 or Mr. McCarthy at 675-3342.
