Another painting is a view down the stairwell of a rooming house or an apartment, which includes at close range a floor and a half with a cat grooming itself in an entry at the bottom and an interested occupant, apparently a housewife, bending over a railing at the top, perhaps trying to coax the cat to come upstairs. This stark “photo shot” is a work of art owing to the sheer determination of its creator.
Paintings like Francis’ can be enjoyed one at a time, but I believe a room full of them would be tiresome and overpowering.
Again, I’m going to have to stint several of the participating artists, but I want to comment briefly on the contrast two of the water colorists make with their pictures. Douglas Teller’s small images of the mountain landscapes so familiar to us are more suggestive of hills, trees, water and a few man-made objects than substantial portrayals of them.
