The state Health Department has approved plans to make modifications at the Sperryville sewer plant to lessen surge problems.
, Currently then; are surges at the plant whenever one of the pumps §ftuts off, as it does approximately every 15 minutes. This means that extra chemicals are used to accomodate that maximum flow. This has been one of the reasons that costs for chemicals have increased drastically since the dechlorinator was installed.
“As part of the consent order the Water and Sewer Authority signed following problems at the plant last summer, the authority agreed to study the problem and implement plans to minimize flow surges. Environmental Systems Services of Culpeper, which operated the plant from July until March, submitted a plan to provide a different link between basins as a way to minimize these surges, but several months went by before the Health Department gave its OK to make the changes. • ,Nowr ESS will set up a schedule tppiake the modifications. ^,At Thursday’s meeting the WSA also learned that meeting one of the other requirements of the consent order had cost $2,400. ESS was paid that amount to write a revised operations and maintenance manual for the plant. ' In a letter from member Jimmy Swindler Jr., who missed last week’s meeting because of illness, the WSA learned that ESS will be charging $192 per weekend to operate the plant for four hours each on Saturday and Sunday, and $28 per week for laboratory tests. ESS would also charge $400 per quarter to make quarterly inspections and would be available on an emergency basis for $5f) per hour plus 30 cents per mile. L The WSA agreed to try to move quickly to find another operator for weekends and decided to study the other proposals from ESS.
