in Europe and the U.S. and obtained a doctorate from Yale Law School where he continues to lecture on “Nation Building in Africa”.
As an author, he has written or edited over a dozen books in the field of folklore, law, anthropology and politics, and has completed two novels highlighting his country, their struggles and the life of his father, Deng Majok.
His first book won the Herskovits Award given by the African Studies Association.
Dr. Deng’s talents are spread among a variety of impressive positions. He was recently selected by the U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali to be his personal representative on the problem of displaced people throughout the world.
Most recently, this has included the Somalians and the exiled Palestinians. He has been Sudan’s Ambassador to Canada, the Scandanavian countries and to the United States.
The Rappahannock Library will have, for reference, several of Francis Mading Deng’s books available, including “Dinka Folktales” and “Cry of the Owl”.
