OK, troops! Halt! At ease. The scouting party that has been in search of “dysfunctional” may now disband. This mot du jour of 1992 has had its jour. On to something else.
It was toward the end of November that I asked for citations of “dysfunctional.” The word, was spreading like measles. In mid-January I reported the first fruits of the search. More than 300 readers had sent clippings of the epidemic adjective. Now the contributions have doubled. Enough! Enough already.
A reviewer in The New York Times Book Review finds a new cause for worry: a dysfunctional space station of the future. A feature in The Dallas Morning News deals with the dysfunctional band shell in New York’s Central Park. *
