The Christendom Players of Christendom College, Front Royal, will perform Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 28, at 3 p.m. at The Theatre at Washington.
The play, adapted for the stage by Helen Jerome in 1934, proved a great success in London and New York. The 1939 Hollywood film, starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, was based on this adaptation.
Austen’s story is universally loved for the delightful characters of Miss Elizabeth (or Lizzie) Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Mrs. Bennet, the ever-scheming mother of Lizzie, learns of the recent arrival of Mr. Darcy and his friend Mr. Charles Bingley, both fresh from the aristocratic set in London.
Immediately she eyes the two eligible and wealthy young men as possible matches for at least one of her daughters. Soon the sparks fly between Lizzie and Darcy, who make up one of the most engaging of all literary couples. Both of them have mixed feelings, clearly attracted to the other yet just as clearly trying to fight off the attraction. Lizzie cannot bear Darcy’s apparent condescension and arrogance.
