Virginia fanners produce the following commodities, among many others: tobacco, soybean, peanuts, small grains, fruits, Corn grain and silage, hay, potatoes, vegetables, nursery products, flowers, watermelons and cantaloupes, mushrooms, cotton, cattle/calves, broilers, milk, turkeys, hogs, eggs, sheep and wool, horses and mules, honey, mink, trout, hybrid striped bass, catfish.
The U.S. agricultural labor force, which includes forestry, hunting, and fishing, represents 0.3 percent of the world’s agricultural labor force, yet it produces 40 percent of the world’s com, 15 percent of the world’s cotton, 50 percent of the world’s soybean, 10 percent of the world’s wheat, 25 percent of the world’s beef, and 11 percent of the world’s pork. In 1991, the U.S. exported $37.6 billion worth of farm products, cutting our deficit in nonfarm trade by about 14 percent.
The quality, quantity, and variety of foods we enjoy today are important factors in imporving the quality of life in the U.S. Since the 1900s, the average life span of a child bom in the U.S. has increased from 47.3 years to 74.7 years. Yet even with the safety, wholesomeness, and variety of our food supply, Americans spend only 10 percent of their personal disposable income of food, while the French spend 16 percent, the Japanese 18 percent, Mexicans 32 percent, Chinese 48 percent, and Indians 53 percent.
