In fact, it’s Virginia’s biggest business, a highly diverse, $20 billion-plus industry that incorporates more than 250 commodities. And the person who makes it all possible is the Virginia farmer.
Virginia farmers are diversified with field crops and fruit accounting for 30 percent, poultry and eggs 25 percent, cattle and calves 20 percent, dairy 13 percent, nursery/floriculture 5 percent, with the reminder spread over such enterprises as horses, honey, and trout.
Leading Farm Products
11 Virginia’s ten leading farm income-producing enterprises in 1991 were cattle, broilers, milk, tobacco, turkeys, soybeans, peanuts, hogs, eggs and com for grain (1990 figures), according to Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
