She said one problem in trying to provide mental health services for the elderly in that there is a “stigma” connected with mental health issues, and most of the elderly are “scared to death that they will be carried off to Staunton.”
Mr. Waldeck said that changes to come with reforms in health care may mean that fewer people will have insurance covering an extended series of counselling sessions. However, as coverage is extended to everybody, more people may have insurance covering a few sessions of counselling. He said this would probably mean that counselors would be more dependent on support groups for follow-up.
