At a special meeting Monday evening the School Board learned that the school system had finished the budget year with a nearly $31,000 surplus and decided to return the money to the county general fund. r Last winter School Superintendent David Gangel asked the Board of Supervisors to approve an additional $25,435 appropriation for the schools. At the time he said the School Board would not spend the additional funds without getting permission from the supervisors first. Most of these funds were additional funds from the state based on an enrollment exceeding the 1,010 that had been used in developing the budget. The School Board did not need to use these funds.
The actual Average Daily Membership figure used to compute state aid is based on membership through March. That figure was 1,018. By the end of the year membership was down to 994, 617 at the elementary school and 377 at the high school.
During the school year, Dr. Gangel said he was concerned the School system would not be able to complete the school year within the budget. Unexpected expenses came to nearly $100,000. Although some categories within the budget were overspent, such as homebound instruction, health services, and school foods, savings in classroom instruction, improvement of instruction, executive administrative services, and vehicle operation were
