Mammals and birds visit springs and depend on the constant supply of water to get through late summer dry periods. Deer, black bear, bobcat, turkey, grouse, and other animals found in these mountains may vipit a spring throughout their day. When you find a spring, look for tracks, nibbled plants and other sign of previous travellers.
Springs are truly a fountain of life and deserve respect. Never litter near a stream area or contaminate a spring with something that you wouldn't want to drink yourself.
As inviting as it appears, don’t drink the water of a spring or stream without treating it. Bacteria and parasites also thrive in fresh water. Many soils near streams have been contaimnated by animals, wild and domestic, two legged and four-legged. One such organism produces Giardiasis (Gee-ar-DYE-a-sis), a very unpleasant intestinal disorder. Always boil or carefully filter water taken from a stream or spring. While you’re hear, take the time to explore one of Shenandoah’s springs. It’s a rare and wonderul opportunity.
