Dog days: These hot, uncomfortable days which commence July 3rd and continue into early August are traditionally occasioned by the rising of the Dog Star.

In the garden: Keep an eye on proper soil temperature as well as sufficient moisture. A good mulch lowers temperatures encouraging full production. Lack of moisture once tomatoes have set blossoms may cause blossom end rot as well as inferior fruit.

Our feathered friends: If birds have nested and produced young in one of you potted outdoor hanging plants. Stop watering. Instead, several ice cubes, carefully placed in the pot so as not to disturb the newly hatched birds, will prevent their drowning.
