nominee and himself, he could attract enough votes to eke out a victory against two people who would enter the campaign with considerable baggage.
And even if he lost, Wilder might have the satisfaction of knowing his independent candidacy took away enough votes from Democratic base groups such as blacks and labor to deny Robb re-election.
I would not be at all surprised to see Wilder decide on an independent candidacy.
He has never cared much for Robb and that antipathy has greatly deepend •'.since some of Robb’s friends intercepted Wilder’s cellular phone conversations and members of Robb’s staff tried to use them against the governor.
Ironically, at a time Wilder is the state’s chief executive and Robb is in the U.S. Senate, the two Democrats will probably play very limited roles in this year’s statewide races, mainly because the various Democratic nominees are being advised they might do more harm than good by campaigning actively.
Politics in Virginia these days can’t get much wilder. Or can they?
