Jason Carroll (the name is changed to protect his privacy), a diabetic since the age of 13, had unsuccessful eye surgery in 1978 and developed an infection that resulted in amputation of both legs above the knee. Jason applied for and received Social Security disability benefits. He also received vocational rehabilitation services from a State agency. With this support, he returned to college and in 1983 graduated with a bachelors degree in social work and business administration. Today he is a State vocational rehabilitation counselor and is teaching others what he learned through both his studies and his life experiences.
This is a true story, and one that illustrates a fact that far too many people may not know about--that is, rehabilitation help is available is they become disabled.
