dents are dropping on this measure. Sixth-eight percent passed these tests in the 1989-90 school year, and 47 percent passed in 1990-91.
In former years all students in 4th through 7th grade had physical education every school day. Then that was dropped to two to three days a week. A few' years ago, when the elementary school went to one “pull out” period for each class, physical education had to compete with art, music (including chorus and band), and the study of foreign language for the students’ time. Fewer elementary students are taking physical education regularly, and that may be reflected in the lower percentage of high school students passing the physical fitness tests.
