The state and the county are both more than one point below the nationwide unemployment rate of 7.1 percent.
The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) estimates that 186 people in Rappahannock County were looking for employment but couldn’t find jobs in June, versus 178 unemployed the month before.
The unemployment rate for all of Planning District 9, which includes the counties of Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Orange was 4.6 percent. The lowest rate, 3.9, was in Fauquier County, which is also the most populous county in the district and the closest to the metropolitan D.C. area.
Mr. Robert R. Hale-Cooper, job service manager at the VEC in Culpeper, attributes much of the rise to graduating high school students who are seeking work. “Normally it takes high school graduates about six weeks to find a job,” he said, “but " these days it is taking somew-hat longer.”
