The VOF was chartered in 1966 and is funded only partially by the state, getting approximately $60,000 per year. The foundation’s mission is to preserve open space in Virginia by holding donated open space easements.
An open space easement is a gift of specific development rights which, once given, become a permanent part of the deed. In order to protect the rural character of a parcel of land, the owner can deed any future development rights to one of several state and private agencies, but the VOF is the most prominent.
The VOF, according to Mrs. Haskell’s report, holds 431 open space easements protecting almost 83,000 acres across the state, including about 5,600 in Rappahannock County and 28,000 in Fauquier.
Near the end of her report, Mrs. Haskell als<» suggested other topics for discussion by the VOF directors at a planned September work session, including the development of written bylaws, a written job description for the executive director, and the development of management plans for land owned by the VOF.
