public health nurse, retired from the Health Department in 1986 after*. 36 years service. She worked with Mr. Lockhart from the time he began employment with the Health Department in 1966 until Mrs. Thornton’s retirement in 1986.
“He’s the nicest person I’ve ever worked with,” she said. ‘‘He was real good to his friends. He was a good tease, and liked jokes even when they were on him,” she added.
When Mr. Fanning Baumgardner was a county enginer he worked closely with Mr. Lockhart. “He was serious about his work, sometimes to the point of antagonizing people,” said Mr. Baumgardner, who was a pallbearer. “But it was never personal. He was just conscientious and wanted to do things right.”
