On your travels through the area you may notice some field that are using parallel field strips. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they greatly reduce soil erosion. With the technical knowledge and cost-share funds that are available through the Chesapeake Bay Program and ASCS offices, stripcropping is an excellent way to preserve the land and keep it in good conservation use.
Throughout the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes the counties of Rappahannock, Madison, Culpeper, Greene and Orange, there were approximately 600 acres of stripcropping installed in 1992.
Field strips are a system of stripcropping in which crops are grown in parallel strips laid across the general slope of the land, but not necessarily on the contour. Stips of close growing hay crops such as grasses and clovers or alfalfa are excellent with the strip of corn.
