Beyer, while others say they will simply mark ballots for governor and attorney general and not vote at all in the election for lieutenant governor.
Farris supporters faced with the open hostility of former Kilberg supporters — a hostility that has not been renounced by Kilberg — angrily declare that anyone who w as a delegate to the state Republican convention and refuses to back all nominees of the party is committing -a breach of faith.
Any significant defection of regulars away from Farris might sink any chance his longshot candidacy may have against Beyer, although some of his strategists contend such defections will be more than compensated for by new and enthusiastic workers and voters Farris will attract to his candidacy.
Gubernatorial nominee Allen, while insisting that he and Farris agree on most issued, is nevertheless keeping his campaign distinctly separate from that of Farris, who recently contended that abortion may sometimes be a cause of breast cancer in women. >
Asked about that comment, Allen said breast cancer was a serious topic and that all possible causes should be investigated. Then he went quickly on to another subject.
The Farris candidacy points up what is becoming a highly divisive dilema for the state GOP, a growing rift between mainline party regulrs and conservative elements with some of their roots in fundamentalism.
It is reminiscent of the liberalconservative split that rendered the Democratic Party in Virginia a political basket case throughout most of the 1970s. 1
