He said in the meantime the consultant is proceeding with the Part B application for the new cell at the county’s landfill.
He also reported that agriculture agent Scott Cunningham happened to see that six bags of potentially hazardous chemicals were put in the Huntlv dumpster. He said Mr. Cunningham contacted him, and he contacted the sheriffs department. The bags were moved to the covered shed at the landfill, and Mr. Cunningham found farmers who were interested in taking the chemicals, Mr. McCarthy said.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie said that an incident like that “is one of my biggest fears. The county could be liable.”
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham agreed saying that is why most counties are going to manned sites. He said that the “convenience sites” in Fauquier are manned and open 36 hours a week. He said that in Rappahannock even fewer hours would probably be possible, “but then people just throw stuff over the fence.”
The supervisors agreed to postpone consideration of abandoning a section of Route 707 until the February meeting. Mr. McCarthy said he had talked with Sandy Rives, of the Shenandoah National Park, who said the park generally is opposed to closing off access to trails in the
