“I’d like to go back and interview some of these people,” Mrs. Kidwell said. She mentioned a man whose last name was Shaffner who left $10,000 for a memorial to his mother. She said the money was never forthcoming, although Shaffner was fairly prominent having worked with Samuel Morse on the telegraph.
Another interesting character treated himself for cancer, even operating on his own eye, she said. He was considered a black sheep and not hurried in the family cemetery, she added.
Mrs. Welch agreed. “I’d like to interview some of these Easthams that built this place,” she said, referring to Mountain Green.
They are pleased that people are enjoying the book. Several have said it has saved them hours of research on their own. Many report that they find the stories in the book fascinating and can’t put the book down, they say.
Currently they are working with the Rappahannock Historical Society going through old chancery records in the clerk’s office. They are loving every minute of that work, finding all sorts of treasures. “If we’d known about the chancery records, we would never have finished this book,” Mrs. Kidwell concluded.
