The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), formerly the Soil Conservation Service, will begin providing wetlands determinations for agricultural land and send the information to USDA program participants.
Lue Waiters, district conservationist for NRCS in Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison and Orange counties, said until last year, farmers and landowners had to check with more than one agency to determine the presence of wetlands on their property. Mr. Walters noted that in January 1994, NRCS, EPA, Fish and Wildlife Service and the Corps of Engineers agreed that NRCS would have authority to identify wetlands on agricultural land, and the other three agencies would accept the identification.
A new definition of wetlands may mean that land previously identified as wetlands no longer meets the definition, he said. While NRCS will be using criteria similar to what they have used since 1989 in agricultural situations, there is now more and better data avail• able to identify wetlands than in the past.
