juniors, six sophomores and one freshman. “It’s a young team without a lot of varsity experience,” he said.
Although Coach Gochenour has experience umpiring and managing baseball teams, this is his first year as a varsity coach.
Coach Carl Payne is also in his first year coaching softball. “It looks pretty good, so far,” he said, but added, “It’s hard to tell when you don’t know how good the other teams in the district are.”
He has Cyndi Welch, Amy Payne, Susan Jewell and Janet Hitt returning to the varsity as seniors. Juniors Cari Kerr and Courtney Welch will add experience also. Junior Sandra Kludasch is an exchange student from Germany who has one year experience at home. Coach Payne is not sure how much she will be able to contribute, “but she’s fast,” he said.
He is expecting pitching from Amy Payne, Kylene Wolf and Cyndi Welch. Angie Atkins will be catching. He is also expecting Keirsten Kerr to get a lot of playing time.
Coach Payne said he has a number of freshmen out for the team, and while they may not get a lot of playing time, they will gain experience. “Our goal is to end up in the top four, to make the playoffs,” he said.
