Board Approves
School Budget

The School Board unanimously adopted a $6.14 million budget Tuesday night.
This budget had been cut SI 83,589 from the original proposal. It includes a 2 percent increase to the teachers’ and teachers aides’ salary scales. This produces a teachers’ salary scale that ranges from S22,063 for a beginning teacher with a bachelor's degree to $35,802 for a teacher with 29 years’ experience. An additional $1,800 is offered for a master’s degree.
The teachers’ aide salary schedule ranges from $9,733 as a starting salary to $12,734 with 20 or more years of experience.
I he first draft of the budget included a 5 percent increase to the teachers’ salary scale.
The budget now goes to the Board of Supervisors which has scheduled a public hearing for April 24 with adoption of the school budget for the coming year scheduled for May 1.
School Board member Paul Nichols was absent from Tuesday night’s meeting because of health problems. The ‘board wished him well. Hampton District representative Bryant Lee commended Superintendent David Gangel and bookkeeper Bonnie Haun for their work on the budget and making the adjustments the hoard recommended. “My hat’s otT to you all. You have done an excellent job,” he said.
Chairman Beverly Massie agreed saying board members “certainly appreciate” the hours Mrs. Haun puts into the budget.
The motion to approve the budget was made by Mr. Lee and seconded by Stonewall-Hawthorn District representative John Tole. The budget was approved 4 to 0.
