for the store and works several hours of the week in the store too. Her son Bubby runs the garage and used car and truck business located right next to the store, and Mr. Settle helps with both. He is also a farmer, “a very good farmer,” says Mrs. Settle. She said that farming is his first love. Their daughter Tammy wprked in the store with Mrs. Settle until about three years ago, before moving to Front Royal. Now seven employees, full-time and part-time, put in plenty' of hours each week taking care of the store, with help from all of the Settle family.
Mr. and Mrs. Settle lived in the little house next to the store for 18 years, but not long ago moved to their farm on Route 637. “I love living in Flint Hill,” she said.
The store opens between 4:30 and 4:45 a.m. with breakfast sandwiches for sale. Mrs. Settle said they get quite a business then, with customers stopping by and then heading off in both directions on U.S. 522 to go to work. “Your customers become your extended family. It is hard work, but the people are the nice part.”
In 1990, the Settles changed their gas pumps to Chevron and modernized the operation. Mrs. Settle said they have leak detectors for the gas pumps now. Besides selling gas, they offer kerosene and diesel fuel.
They have a big lunch trade, and a deli with a very good selection of fresh sandwiches and salads. They carry Lauder’s fresh homemade salads, which come from Lauder’s
