Rain Monday night produced some relief from the dry weather of the past several weeks, but it is not enough to truly reduce the danger of fires, Sheriff John Henry Woodward said Tuesday .
The past week saw two structural fires, one that destroyed the home of Chilton Raiford on U.S. 21 1 near Amissville and one that destroyed an outbuilding on David Gheen’s property also near Amissville.
Sheriff Woodward said it is believed that sparks from the chimne\ caused the Raiford fire.
Most of the rest were caused by controlled burning that became uncontrolled, he said.
