To the Editor:
My letter is by way of commenting on two vital issues that concern Rappahannock County at this time...road building and ridge top development.
Wakeup calls abound for anyone who has the vague feeling that we are being herded like cattle toward a future we didn’t choose and may not like. It begins with accepting the arguable premise that we need more, bigger and wider roads, and ends with a landscape and way of life changed forever.
1 read an article once about U.S. highways which described them as being, like the American experience itself, fast, anonymous and lonely. 1 he Rappahannock experience is just the opposite...leisurely, personal and friendly.
Highway departments and companies that do traffic studies have certain agendas, but are they ours? Our agenda for the future might include handwaving’ ...hard to do, if everyone is going fast in the same direction.
And about ridge top development...You can, apparently, own the top of a mountain. You can even be said to “own” the view from the mountain. But you can't own the view of the mountain. That belongs to
