Recently your newspaper carried a flattering story about me, on the occasion of my being chosen by the Hospice of the Rapidan as “Volunteer of the Year” for 1994.
Although I appreciated being recognized in this way for my work with the Hospice, I am left with the feeling that the emphasis was a bit misplaced, since it concentrated on my personal life and my own work with the Hospice.
I would like to urge anyone with whom the article struck a resonant chord, to consider registering for the volunteer training session, to be held at the Hospice headquarters, starting March 28. Call Hospice of the Rapidan at 825-4840 to reserve a place.
Working with people who are terminally ill is not at all like what most people imagine. It is not about dying. It is about living; about helping the patient to live, as fully as possible, their last days, weeks, or months. To be allowed to participate and help in this awesome and wonderful process is a rare gift and privilege.
