Roy Heltzel
Roy Franklin Heltzel, age 70, died on Sunday, Jan. 7 after a long illness.
He was bom on Oct. 16, 1925, at Edinburg, and was the son of the late Grace Heishman Heltzel and Perry Lea Heltzel.
He was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church and had served as a deacon, chairman of the deacon board, Sunday School teacher, and had served on various committees in the church.
He received his bachelor’s of science degree in animal husbandry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1953. He later received his master’s degree from North Carolina State in agriculture.
He worked in Madison and Rappahannock counties for several years as VPI Extension Agent. He came to Culpeper in 1955 and served as VPI Extension Agent (Agriculture) for 32 years of Culpeper County award.
After retirement from extension, he worked with the Culpeper County Farmers Co-op for 10 years as director of training, where he received the Leadership Award from the Virginia Council of Farmers Cooperatives.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara C. Heltzel, a son, Roy F. Heltzel Jr. and his wife Ann J. Heltzel of Norfolk, a daughter, Margaret Paige Haynes and her husband, the Rev. Richard Randall Haynes of Charles City.
He is also survived by three grandsons, Roy F. Heltzel III (Tripp), Ryan Perry Haynes and Joseph Tyler Haynes.
Surviving family also includes a brother, Earl G. Heltzel of Culpeper and three sisters, Renetta Helsley of Woodstock, Ester Polk of Edinburg, and Bessie Sherman of Woodstock.
Memorial contributions may be: made to the Culpeper Baptist Church, Building Fund, West Street, Culpeper, 22701, or the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center, Harmony Hollow Road, Front Royal, 22630.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 14 at Culpeper Baptist Church with the Rev. John S. Farrar officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
Clore Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
