jays taice tneir responsibilities to reproduce themselves very seriously. When the nesting season arrives jays become so quiet one would hardly know they are around. All energy and time is spent in nest building, egg laying, incubation and guarding and feeding the young. No bird except the Great Horned Owl is more fierce and fearless in defending the nest and young than a Blue Jay. I know. I have been attacked and pecked on the head in my attempts to photograph nesting jays.
It would seem that jays are concerned for their fellow birds, for they are the first to announce the presence of a hawk, owl, snake or cat. The trees ring with their cries of indignation; smaller birds either flee to protective cover or gather for the attack. Whether or not to attack depends on the size and nature of the predator.
