I was present at the School Board meeting when the Richmond Times Dispatch article citing Rappahannock among underachievers in attendance was portrayed as simply misleading.' I had an uneasy feeling about this official posture at the time and again on reading Mr. Patterson’s letter. If in fact the administration and paper have “circled the wagons to explain away the problem,” what part ffave we as parents played in allowing this to occur? Are these attendance figures and test scores important indicators to us?
Even experts will disagree about what these data mean. Debating the details could go on as long as any Congressional filibuster. Regardless of the particular issue and our individual perspective, if we care about our children’s education at all, it is enormously important to engage regularly in discussing, articulating and acting on common ideals. We can do this by choosing to participate in the school decision-making process.
