As a parent ot school children I have met many admirable, genuinely dedicated individuals hard at work in the local schools, but I am disappointed at the conspicuous absence of regular, vigorous advocacy for high educational standards. The school system needs many parties — parents, students, teachers, administrators, the school board and community — to be willing to speak up for whatever is valued. Yes, we must recognize that the public system has an extremely tall order, juggling complex requirements and operating under nearly constant financial strain (Rappahannock especially suffers a harsh effect from Virginia’s peculiar state funding formula). No, these practical realities must not be permitted to squelch the aspiration to excel.
