On Jan. 6, Michael Shawn Cooke, 21, of Amissville, was charged with driving under the influence after he had a one-car accident on Route 640 in Amissville. The accident occurred .5 mile south of U.S. 211 at about 8:45 p.m. when Mr. Cooke’s 1978 Jeep ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned, according to Sgt. Hawkins of the State Police. Mr. Cooke was injured but the extent of the injuries are unknown. Trooper Wayne Sumner investigated the accident.
An accident involving two cars took place on Route 729, one mile south of Route 642, at 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 13. A 1993 Honda 4-door driven by James Thomas Gardner, 22, of Culpeper, struck the rear of a 1979 Subaru 2-door driven by a 16 year-old female from Lorton. The Honda sustained $800 damage and the Subaru had $2,000 damage. Trooper Wayne Sumner charged Mr. Gardner with following too closely.
A chimney firfe got out of control at an apartment building in Chester Gap on Jan. 9. Jeff Williams, Chief of the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department, said that the chimney had a crack and no cleanout. The building sustained mostly smoke and water damage. A 6-wheel drive firetruck from Front Royal got stuck in the snow and was pulled out by a grader brought up from a contractor in Flint Hill.
