Elsa is an artist of great sensitivity and talent so I expect she appreciates the Blue Jay’s elegance of plumage with all the shades of blue plus mauve and lilac, set off by gray, black and white. Still, she does not like the jay intimidating the tiny Carolina Chickadee with his black bib and cap or the alert and perky Tufted Titmouse.
Elsa was excited when a Redbellied Woodpecker visited her feeder for the first time; she was delighted with the Chinese red on the bird’s head and the striking black and white pattern on the back. Even a Blue Jay gives way to this big woodpecker with his formidable bill and ruby-red eye.
