on Viennese models from the 1810s, and is stunningly veneered in rich mahogany, making it spectacular visually as well as sonically. Mr. Slowik’s ‘cello was made in Milan by Carlo Antonio Testore in 1750. It is set up with gut strings in the fashion of the early 19th century to match the fortepiano exactly in timbre and articulation. The program has been chosen to highlight each instrument in turn before bringing them together for the A Major Beethoven sonata, one of the composer’s most lyrical works, and by far his best-known for this instrumental combination.
The final concert in the Smithsonian at Little Washington series will take place on Saturday evening, March 23, when the Smithson String Quartet plays works of Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn.
