When the new storm threatened last Friday, Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Bill Wade announced that the park was closed until further notice, not only along the Skyline Drive, but also the trails - accessible from the park’s boundaries.
The winter storm that began Saturday evening, Jan. 6, left the park covered in 3 to 4 feet of snow; winds created snowdrifts of 10 to 20 feet. & “The park will be closed to day hiking, backcountry camping and all other visitor use until after the storm passes through the area and an assessment can be made related to the safety of any visitor use activities,” said Park Superintendent Bill Wade. “It will also take us some time to get the Skyline Drive open for yisitor traffic,” he said. . Anyone wishing to visit the park in the winter, and especially in the next several weeks, should call 540999-3500 for up-to-date information.
The emergency operations that followed the storm last weekend, and included the rescue of 10 people, have strained available resources, both personnel and equipment, to the limit. “Park staff and partners have done a tremendous job,” said Supt. Wade. “We want to thank the Virginia Department of Emergency Services, the U. S. Park Police, the National Guard, and the Virginia Department of Transportation for the use of their equipment and personnel. Without these additional resources, rescue may . have come too late.”
