Mr. Planck said he knows people who are making a living on 20 acres; his family does it on 50 acres. He said fanners have to take over some of the middleman’s functions in order to get a good return. Direct income support to the fanner does not seem the way to go, he added. He believes that the kinds of farms that can support themselves would grow vegetables or fruits and do direct marketing, such as the pickyour-own apple orchards. These types of farms could sell from April to November and save money to live on during the rest of the year.
