Recently a young girl at the elementary school had a serious medical problem and Major MacWelch responded along with CPR trained personnel at the school and the Washington and Sperryville rescue squads. Major MacWelch gave her a bear and blanket which he still had - from his previous job in Fauquier. - When she was leaving in the rescue squad vehicle, he said she “had a real grip on that bear; her knuckles were white.” The children are invited to keep the bears and quilts.
The quilters’ project began when Sheriff Gary Settle asked Maybelle Gilkey, who is a member of the quitters’ group and is his mother-in-law, if she knew who might be able to make the quilts and bears to give out to children who needed them. She asked her group and they responded enthusiastically, and produced the quilts and bears in about a month.
