Softball team Coach Carl Payne is also excited about his team’s prospects. He said 18 players came out, and he kept all 18. His team has six ninth graders, five sophomores, four juniors and three seniors.
“We’ve got a pretty good mix, and they are fairly young,” he said. “It is possible one or two freshmen will be starting.”
He said he expects a strong offense, especially at the start of the lineup. “We’ve got good speed, and they’rd hitting good,” he said.
His biggest concern is pitching. Kylene Wolfe will be the starting pitcher. “If she pitches up to her potential we’ll be all right,” he said. Kati Paratore will be the back up pitcher, and Angie Atkins will be the catcher.
He said his goal for the season is to be one of the top four teams in the district to qualify for the tournament. “If we can open the season with a couple of wins, we’ll have a good season.”
The baseball and softball seasons will begin with away games at Central Friday and Strasburg Monday before the home opener next Wednesday against Page County.
