Paul Brown, another member of the RCHS class of 1995, said of his “rat” year, “I was ready to give up and quit, but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s a bond you share with people. You know you can take it without breaking. It’s the reason ,VMI is so special.”
He said he was “not real happy” about the Supreme Court decision. “Just because one or two girls want to go there, they break a 150-year old tradition.” He said the “rat line” will be affected. “It was disappointing, but I guess it was expected.”
One thing that will have to change, he said, is the language the drill instructors use. There will also have to be changes in the barracks, or perhaps another barracks built for women.
