Camp Fertile Ground at the former Spring Mountain School building got underway on June 24 and will continue through Aug. 15, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The camp for children ages four and up is led by Kitty Keller, the former Nursery/Kindergarten teacher of Spring Mountain School. She will be assisted by Antoinette McPherson.
Special events have been organized for the camp where local craft and skilled members of our community share their talents with the children. These special day events are open to children of all ages and parent participation is welcomed. The idea is that the children actively participate in each event and get a sense of the interconnection between us and nature, to feel the continuum and the thread that runs through and links all life and gain a sense of reverence.
For instance, rather than just be given a pre-bought, pre-packaged lump of clay to sculpt or mold, the children will first go in search of clay deposits to dig up; this way, they will gain a clear sense of where clay comes from and the processes it goes through before being made into cups or plates and a sense of how things used to be done in a hands-on way.
