The - Board of Directors of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has appointed Michael F. Vargo as the new Head of School.
Prior to accepting this position, Mr. Vargo was the Academic Dean at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland. Founder of the International Students Program at Georgetown Prep, Mr. Vargo also served for one year as Headmaster. Mr. Vargo’s commitment to independent education spans 25 years of teaching and administrative duties at three private schools including Georgetown Prep where he has been on the staff for the past 18 years.
A graduate of Georgetown University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969, and New York University where he earned a Master of Arts degree in 1970, Mr. Vargo is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. He also attended post graduate studies at the University of Madrid in Spain; the University of Coimbra in Portugal; and the Sorbonne m Paris, France. Mr. Vargo, 48, began his tenure oh July 1.
He replaces J. Malcolm Schantz who has served as Head of School since 1994, but in January announced his intention to retire at the end of this academic year.
Wakefield Country Day School, founded in 1972, was recently accredited by the Virginia Independent Schools Association.
