Donald Audette suggested to members of the Planning Commission that the county may want to get its own traffic counters instead of relying on figures supplied by VDOT. . Mr. Audette, who is retired, said .he got the idea after seeing the color map in an ad purchased by the ■ Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection opposing proposals for adding lanes and bypasses to county primary roads. ’ That map came from a Kellerco study undertaken for the .Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission that used VDOT traffic counts and projections of future traffic counts. < Mr. Audette said he had contacted several suppliers of traffic counting devices and he provided the planners Mrith low-end, medium-range and high-end alternatives for purchasing this equipment. ’ . He estimated that 32 counters would be needed if the county wanted . to cover the primary roads with counters in each lane and at each end of a road segment. Half as many would be heeded if they were located in the (piddle of a segment. ", The low end device “is about the size of a credit card,” he said. It is fastened to the road in the middle of a lane. It counts vehicles and gives an average speed. It can also determine what percentage Of the vehicles are trucks because it uses a magnet to
