Spontaneous combustion or an electrical problem may have caused the blaze which destroyed the home of Nancy and Kent Reeve in Gid Brown Hollow last Friday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Gary Settle, the arson investigator ruled out foul play as the , cause of the fire. The investigator was on the scene at 10 a.m. on Saturday and has not said for certain what was the cause of the fire.
After the fire was reported to 911 by neighbors of the Reeve family, the call went out to fire departments at 1:45 p.m. on Friday. First on the scene was Deputy Chris Williams of the Sheriff's Office. He is also experienced as a Chester Gap firefighter, and he entered the house to make sure nobody was inside.
Chief Roger Roach of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department was the first firefighter on the scene at 2 p.m. He said the back half of the house was in flames and fire was coming through the roof. Tankers also responded from Sperryville and Amissville, an engine came from Flint Hill and an ambulance from Sperryville rescue.
Because of the steep and winding driveway and no room to turn around near the house, only one or two pieces of equipment could get up to the house at a time, and then they had to back down the driveway to allow another tanker to climb the hill. The tankers were able to fill up with water from a stream near the foot of the driveway on Route 622.
Cfcief Roach said he was really surprised that six people showed up from the Washington Fire Hall, because during the day most people are away at work. He added that many people from Amissville
