The School Board learned that results on the Literacy Passport Tests given to sixth graders did not improve this year, except in math, and were generally down from last year, a trend for the past three years.
This-spring 72 percent of the sixth graders passed the reading test compared to 79.5 percent in 1995, 79.7 percent in 1994 and 94 percent in 1993. For writing 61 percent passed compared to 77.3 percent in 1995, 90.4 percent in 1994 and 94 percent in 1993. In math 77 percent passed this year compared to 74.6 percent in 1995, 79.7 percent in 1994 and 94 percent in 1993.
Assistant Superintendent Mary Ann Biggs said there will be more emphasis on teaching writing; teachers are working on curriculum development to address the problems, and in recruiting teachers she is looking for people with “certain skills and experience.” She said the students “did not do as well as we know they can” based on past performance.
