In 1791 the Bill of Rights was added to our newly enacted Constitution of the United State, which had been supported vigorously by both Madison and Jefferson. The first amendment to our constitution provides: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Now, over 200 years later in our ['own of Washington, The Episcopalians and Baptists enjoy a new and friendly ecumenical relationship. They have joint vacation Bible schools, joint Lenten services and a Thanksgiving service together with the other churches in the county. The Baptist Minister and the Episcopal Rector live across the street from one another and have a close working relationship including a shared jail ministry.
As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of our town and our independence for which our forefathers fought and bled and died, 1 wish for the Town , of Washington another 200 years of health, happiness, peace, prosperity and freedom.
