How ironic that our last Fourth of July together, an occasion for lament over raging rivers and the lives they took, has been followed by a Fourth of July sublime in weather. Yet, of a calmness which has been preceded by a murderous act of terrorism abroad and heinous and senseless acts of church burnings far closer to home.
Our rage against the violence which took American lives in Saudi Arabia is resulting in the marshalling of military security and might which, hopefully, will punish those responsible and thwart such acts in the future.
But if, at home, we as Americans provoke similar atrocities, precisely what rights are we defending abroad? Burning a house of worship is not a right. It is a wrong. And a society, in which such violence occurs — however great we are in so many other ways —
